At a glance:

  • Salary range - The budgeted salary range for this role is set at £31,800 - £37,000 (dependant on experience)

  • Contract type - This position is a Permanent contract starting mid June 2024

  • We know flexible working is important to you, and it is important to us too. The Partnership has adopted a blended working approach meaning you'll be able to work a mixture between the office and home based upon your personal needs whilst balancing the needs of the business. The Design team aim for around 2-3 days a week in the office to connect and on a more ad-hoc basis to attend key meetings but again, are flexible on this.

  • Location - This role is based at our Victoria Head Office campus. Please note, any cost incurred as a result of travel to the office is the responsibility of the successful candidate. There is no travel allowance for this role. There is also a responsibility to visit our John Lewis branches / Suppliers / Trade Shows when necessary. You will be able to claim travel expenses for these journeys.

  • Travel to China, Bangladesh and Europe may be required for this role.

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Menswear design team, designing, developing and delivering original, contemporary and relevant designs for our John Lewis brand KIN. The role focuses on the categories of Knitwear & Jersey and potentially Accessories.


Kin has been around for over 10 years and season by season has formed somewhat of a cult following amongst high street shoppers. The brand is minimalist and design led by offering considered wardrobe essentials through to directional design. KIN is known for innovative fabric development worked into clothing that is effortless and functional.


Key responsibilities:


You will take a key role in design projects, with support from the category design lead, and in collaboration with the buying, merchandising and tech teams.



  • Play a critical role in delivering product design that will be aligned to brand / sub brand guidelines and aligning with customer needs. Support the Design Team and studio in fulfilling key tasks across the season.

  • Preparation and presentation of relevant and appropriate category trend research.

  • You will research thoroughly into your Category/Brands by setting out seasonal trend boards and colour palettes, have excellent illustration and cad skills, whilst being proficient in Adobe and other specialist design software.

  • Ensure the sampling process is efficient. Produce precise design packs and fulfil seasonal design briefs with commercial and innovative solutions, supported by illustrating / briefing / sourcing key materials and details. Ensure accurate samples are produced.

  • Work collaboratively with all levels of buying, merchandise and the technical team to co-create the briefs & deliver identified outcomes ensuring that these align with the brand guidelines.


Essential skills you'll need:

  • Experience in designing knitwear and jersey

  • Have an excellent understanding of various yarns, weights, gauges, knit structures and dying techniques.

  • Excellent skills in Adobe Suite (Illustrator, photoshop etc) and other specialist design software.

  • Experience in stakeholder management, working and liaising with suppliers

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Experience formulating briefs

  • Experience doing fittings and confidence in following through styles, from sketch to production.

  • Delivering designs on time within the seasonal critical path.

  • A strong understanding of the JL&P brand and / or sub brands, their brand values and potential for product


Desirable skills you'll have:

  • Commercially minded, quick to respond to business needs

  • Creative thinking matched with time management

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Able to express opinions in a friendly, polite and non-confrontational way in order to build strong team relationships/trust, able to handle criticism/feedback

  • Relevant Design Degree
