Where you fit in
The Senior Continental Power Trader plays a key role in the UK/Continental Power Trading Desk, as a senior power trader across the CWE markets.
The UK/Continental Power Trading team itself, part of Shell Energy Europe & Africa’s (SE-EA) European Power Trading team, is responsible for the proprietary trading, and the management of a growing portfolio comprising customer demand, renewable, batteries and thermal generation. The team manages exposures down the curve through to delivery.

As such, SE-EA trades natural gas, power, green power certificates, voluntary/compliance driven environmental products with counterparties including major resource holders of gas, upstream producers, investment banks, trading houses, utilities, power generators, large as well as up-and coming retail gas and power marketing companies, regional and local gas and power distribution companies, gas storage operators, and large industrial and commercial gas and power users.

What’s the role?
Main opportunity, challenges and responsibilities:
- Construct trading strategies, take positions and manage exposures from both traded strategies and across the asset portfolio based on analysis of fundamental, weather and technical market conditions across multiple markets
- Ability to spot distortions between geographies, tenors, and generation type.
- Understand and communicate risks being taken
- Supporting the development of the desk’s capabilities, portfolio and fundamental model
- Working with external (and internal) customers alongside business development to bring in new structures to the book, or deal types to help optimise existing exposures.
- Staying on top of the latest regulatory and market developments
- Observe and strictly comply with all regulatory guidelines, and within mandated authorities.
- Coach & educate junior colleagues.
We are keen to hear from experienced trading professionals and likely to be a strong contender if you have hands on experience in the following:
- Siginificant years in power curve trading experience, with focus on the European Markets (especially Germany and Netherlands), with a proven track record
- Established network with other market participants and industry players
- Deep understanding of physical power markets, ideally with previous experience in managing assets (thermal and renewable)
- Strong grasp of market and weather fundamentals, and willingness to work with the fundamental team to drive model development
