Sustainable Futures Group

Ready to lead and grow a sustainability function at the heart of the built environment?

Sustainable Futures Group (SFG) is working with a well-established, multi-disciplinary consultancy to recruit a Head of Sustainability – a commercially focused leadership role driving both technical excellence and business growth across a broad range of sustainability services.

Based in London with hybrid working (3 days office, 2 days WFH), this is a rare opportunity to step into a senior role with full responsibility for team performance, service development, and strategic direction – all while working alongside experts in architecture, MEP, project management and surveying.

Why this role?

This is a leadership role with real autonomy – managing a multi-skilled team delivering retrofit consultancy, BREEAM, lifecycle carbon, ESG strategies, and planning support. The consultancy has a strong reputation in the public sector, and the sustainability team is seen as a key growth driver for the future.

You’ll lead the function as a standalone business unit, supported by board-level leadership but trusted to make the technical and commercial decisions. It’s ideal for someone who thrives on ownership and visibility – and wants to take a team and service offering to the next level.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading and managing a multi-disciplinary sustainability team across energy, carbon, planning, retrofit and certification services (such as BREEAM)
  • Taking ownership of service line performance, client relationships, bids, and commercial delivery
  • Overseeing technical quality and acting as third signatory on all key outputs
  • Growing the sustainability offering through market insight, business development and cross-discipline collaboration
  • Representing the team internally and externally at events, forums and with clients
  • Supporting the wider business with internal ESG reporting and carbon planning initiatives

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong consultancy background with experience leading sustainability services in the built environment
  • First degree in engineering (e.g. mechanical, building services) – essential
  • Postgraduate degree in sustainability or related subject – desirable
  • Experience managing a team and running a business unit or cost centre
  • Confident communicator, able to win work, pitch to clients and represent the company externally
  • Technically credible across key UK sustainability frameworks including PAS 2035/2038, lifecycle assessment, and BREEAM

What’s on Offer

  • Salary in the region of £85,000 – £100,000 depending on experience
  • Performance-related bonus
  • BUPA private healthcare
  • Company pension scheme
  • Flexible hybrid working model
  • Clear pathway to Director-level position for the right candidate
  • Full autonomy to lead, shape and grow your team and service line

This isn’t just another consultancy role - it’s a chance to lead from the front, define your career trajectory, and make a real impact in a growing, strategically important team.
