Job Summary

The Environmental Manager is responsible for providing the project with specialist support, and proactively driving the outcomes of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions and BREEAM certifications for the project.


The person will also be responsible for working collaboratively with the Environmental Lead, Environmental and Sustainability Managers, designers, consultants, the construction team, and other stakeholders to create and develop the culture and behaviours to meet the client requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update the carbon management plan for the project in accordance with the client requirements and parent company standards.
  • Work collaboratively with the design team to update the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) every 6 months and ensure a final ‘as-built’ LCA shall be conducted at the end of construction. To ensure the final LCA is completed EPDs will need to be fed into the design team to update the LCA appropriately.
  • Continue to develop the strategy for net zero on the project and work with other stakeholders to identify and develop opportunities for further carbon reductions towards a net zero strategy.
  • Work collaboratively with design and construction teams to identify risk and opportunities and ensure these are tracked and updated though the use of an opportunities matrix and the project risk register.
  • Monitor progress of design team deliverables relating to Carbon and BREEAM. Hold the design team to account and escalate issues through appropriate mechanisms.
  • Liaise with the design and construction teams to ensure that the client Environmental Minimum Requirements Compliance Notes are produced and approved for the packages of works.
  • Engage with design teams and other key stakeholders to look for new opportunities to reduce carbon and progress carbon reduction opportunities through scheme design.
  • Manage LCA tool software licenses and access.
  • Support BREEAM process as the appointed BREEAM Advisory Professional.
  • Attend key design team meetings to ensure BREEAM performance targets are not lost.
  • Act as the chair of the Carbon Steering Group, holding others to account and ensuring agreed actions are closed out in a timely manner.
  • Record meeting minutes, site visit reports and correspondence with the project team to demonstrate progress against BREEAM targets.
  • During construction, regularly attend site and project team meetings to ensure construction and installations are in line with the targeted BREEAM credit requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with the BREEAM assessor, project team and contractors to ensure timely submittal of evidence, using Tracker+.
  • Develop and deliver training and awareness raising measures, supporting the Environmental Lead.
  • Support corporate environmental and sustainability activities and initiatives such as knowledge sharing and volunteering.
  • Report data to client on a quarterly and six-monthly basis according to contract requirements.


Qualifications, Certifications And Experience

  • Relevant experience of carbon and BREEAM assessment
  • Experience of undertaking assessments of the carbon and energy impact of construction projects.
  • Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically environmental discipline (or related).
  • Professional membership of an appropriate environmental body (eg MIEMA)
  • Appropriate CSCS card type and level


Technical Competencies

  • Understanding of LCA
  • Familiar with ISO14040, ISO14044, PAS2080:216 and the use of carbon foot printing tools or other carbon life cycle assessment methodologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of application of Type III environmental declarations in the construction context, specifically awareness of EN 15978:2011 and EN 15804:2012+A1:2013
  • Understanding of the relevance of sustainability to them and to the business and its commitments to economic development, social enrichment, and environmental protection.
  • Knowledge and experience of BREEAM
  • Rigorous, methodological, analytical – able to process data, identify trends, and summarise.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office particularly Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Effective communication skills in English, able to communicate confidently with a range of people, adapting communication style to have a positive impact.
