London Ability is recruiting on behalf of a professional with a visual impairment who needs administrative and workplace support. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in a public sector organisation, provide practical assistance and make a valuable difference to someone’s working life.
This is an on-site, part time role (up to 30 hours a week) based in Ilford.
Main Purpose of job: To provide administrative and practical support to a visually impaired Benefits Officer, enabling them to carry out their duties effectively within a large public sector organisation. The post holder will assist with reading, document management, correspondence, and general office tasks to ensure that work is completed accurately, efficiently, and in line with confidentiality requirements.
Main tasks:
- Read and interpret documents using a document imaging system, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Access and read data from computer systems to assist with the calculation of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.
- Manage emails and attachments, including reading, drafting, and saving correspondence appropriately.
- Prepare written decisions, correspondence, and reports through dictation.
- Proofread letters and documents to check for accuracy and correct formatting.
- Maintain diaries, schedule meetings, and organise appointments as required.
- Print, photocopy, and file documents in line with office procedures.
- Support the customer in navigating office systems and accompanying them to other areas of the Council as needed.
- Handle confidential and sensitive information in accordance with data protection and organisational policies.
- Undertake any other reasonable administrative duties to support the effective delivery of the customer’s role.
- Working in line company policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
- GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent)
- At least 2 years’ administrative experience
- Confident reader, comfortable handling information and data
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Minimum 1 years’ experience as a support worker (or in a similar supportive role)
- Strong organisation skills, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Experience supporting someone with a visual impairment or disability in a workplace setting (desirable)
- Understanding of reasonable adjustments and inclusive working practices. (desirable)
