About the Group

The Economics Group leads HM Treasury’s analysis of developments in the UK economy and advises ministers on the implications for the Government’s economic strategy. It provides expert economic analysis and advice for Ministers. The Group collaborates with external experts on the UK economy, including the Bank of England, Office for Budget Responsibility and leading academics. Economics Group provides support for the UK Government’s economic and social research professions, including running centralised recruitment and the annual conferences.

About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead some of the Treasury’s key cross-cutting analysis to help shape economic policy and improve lives. You will work closely with other teams across HMT, and with a wide range of external experts including Bank of England, the OBR, and the ONS. The role involves creating and deploying high-impact analysis and evidence to improve economic policy decisions affecting people across the UK and shape the government's economic narrative. It also involves extensive leadership and working flexibly as part of a friendly, inclusive and high performing team where we support each other to develop ourselves and our positive contribution to society. At times this may include changes to responsibilities to respond to HMT priorities.

Some of the responsibilities of this role include:

  • Lead HMT’s analysis on inflation and cost of living, including the overall narrative, outlook, and impact of policy. Provide timely advice to Ministers and senior officials. Lead briefing for key data releases.
  • Oversee and improve HMT’s short-term inflation forecasting framework (STIF), incorporating multiple models and expert judgement to inform overall economic strategy and specific policy decisions.
  • Deliver impactful economic and policy analysis on inflation, including assessing the inflationary impact of policy measures at budget and shaping longer-term policy in this space. Management responsibility for two other economists.

About You:

  • You have an undergraduate degree in Economics, or equivalent work experience and possess a first or upper second-class honours degree with at least half of the modules in economics.
  • Your strong skills across economics technical frameworks include the ability to analyse multiple and complex datasets at pace to bring out the most meaningful insights, as well as communicating economic policy to non-technical audiences.
  • You have proven experience leading sophisticated analytical or policy work. You work with others to assess diverse evidence and apply good judgment to weigh factors and reach conclusions under uncertainty.
  • You can build and harness effective relationships, and communicate effectively with Ministers, seniors and both internal and external stakeholders (domestic and/or international) with different priorities and objectives, breaking down complex information into clear policy choices and flexing communication style to deliver objectives.
  • You build good relationships with colleagues from different teams allows you to use these connections to drive goals forward.
