JOB PURPOSE Teacher of Deaf children
The TOD role is part of Lewisham Sensory Teachers Team, delivering specialist teaching, advice and support to children and young people (CYP) who are deaf/Hard of Hearing, from birth to 25 years old. Our aim is to remove and reduce barriers to learning so that we can help to maximise their developmental, academic and social/emotional potential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Teacher of Deaf children
- Specialist assessment, planning, teaching, advising and reporting, for pupils with deaf/hearing needs; using the Specialist Deaf Curriculum.
- Understanding and supporting the social, emotional and educational needs of deaf/hard of hearing children/young people.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with children/young people, families and professionals.
- Delivering programmes of learning for individuals and groups, including deaf awareness training for staff and support for families.
- Maintaining accurate records and completing reports; using technology effectively for work including Microsoft 365 applications.
- Contributing to EHCP needs assessments, reviews and reports within agreed timeframes/deadlines.
- Monitoring, supporting and maintaining audiological equipment; liaising with audiology professionals.
- Living Lewisham’s values and following council policies and practices, including (but not limited to): anti-racist practice, safeguarding and GDPR.
-Being aware of and adhering to the duties and responsibilities of a TOD, including (but not limited to): the SEND Code of Practice (2014), Keeping Children Safe in Education (annual updates), Children and Families Act (2010) and the Equality Act (2010).
