Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Building Services

Location: Fully Remote, UK
Travel: London – approximately twice per month
Employment Type: Permanent
Sector: Building Services / Engineering Consultancy
Discipline: Mechanical Design

The Opportunity

A leading engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team on a fully remote basis, with travel to London approximately twice per month.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in building services to take a leading role across a diverse portfolio of technically challenging projects.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across mechanical design, working closely with clients, project managers, engineers and multidisciplinary design teams to deliver high-quality building services solutions from concept through to completion.

This role offers the flexibility of fully remote working, combined with regular face-to-face collaboration in London and the opportunity to take ownership of major engineering projects.

The Role

As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take responsibility for the technical delivery of mechanical building services design across a range of projects.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead mechanical design from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and project delivery.
  • Provide technical leadership across building services projects.
  • Take ownership of mechanical engineering packages and ensure designs are delivered to a high technical standard.
  • Develop and review HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation and domestic water systems.
  • Produce and review mechanical calculations, specifications, drawings and technical reports.
  • Coordinate mechanical design with electrical, structural, architectural and other disciplines.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and senior engineers.
  • Lead design reviews and technical meetings with clients and project stakeholders.
  • Manage technical interfaces and resolve complex building services engineering issues.
  • Ensure mechanical designs comply with relevant British Standards, CIBSE guidance, Building Regulations and project requirements.
  • Support project planning, programme management and resource allocation.
  • Review and approve technical documentation produced by the wider mechanical design team.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.
  • Contribute to business development, technical proposals and the continued growth of the building services team.

You will be expected to apply your technical expertise to develop practical, efficient and commercially viable mechanical design solutions.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer who can demonstrate strong technical knowledge and proven experience within building services engineering.

You should have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant professional experience in mechanical building services design.
  • Proven experience working as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Principal Mechanical Engineer or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC and wider mechanical building services systems.
  • Experience taking ownership of complex mechanical design projects.
  • Strong understanding of relevant UK standards, Building Regulations and CIBSE guidance.
  • Experience managing technical deliverables and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication and technical reporting abilities.
  • The confidence to provide technical leadership and mentor other engineers.
  • A commercially aware and solutions-focused approach.
  • Ability to work independently within a fully remote environment.

Chartered status or working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status would also be advantageous.

Working Arrangement

This is a fully remote Principal Mechanical Design Engineer position, providing significant flexibility and the opportunity to work from anywhere in the UK.

There will be an expectation to travel to London approximately twice per month for team meetings, client engagement, project workshops and other key activities.

The role is therefore ideally suited to an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who values remote working but enjoys regular collaboration with colleagues and clients.
