Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Java Developer to support a major application refactoring and migration programme. Working as part of a large, multi-disciplinary programme team, you will collaborate closely with client stakeholders, architects, developers, and delivery teams to modernise and migrate critical business applications to AWS.

This role will involve the design, development, testing, assurance, and migration of key application components, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with modern cloud-native development practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise Java applications as part of a large-scale transformation programme.
  • Support the refactoring and migration of legacy applications to AWS cloud environments.
  • Collaborate directly with client teams and programme stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver technical solutions.
  • Develop and enhance application components in line with architectural and security standards.
  • Contribute to application modernisation initiatives, including cloud-native and microservices-based solutions.
  • Perform code reviews and ensure adherence to development best practices and coding standards.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation to support development and operational activities.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application issues throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support testing, deployment, and release activities across development, test, and production environments.
  • Work within Agile delivery teams to achieve programme objectives and milestones.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise

  • Strong hands-on experience developing enterprise applications using Java.
  • Proven experience supporting the migration of Java applications to AWS.
  • Experience with modern Java frameworks such as:
    • Spring
    • Spring Boot
    • Hibernate
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs and service-oriented architectures.
  • Experience working with cloud-native application development principles.
  • Knowledge of AWS services relevant to application migration, deployment, and operation.
  • Experience with source control systems such as Git.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes and Agile delivery methodologies.

Cloud & Migration Experience

  • Demonstrable experience refactoring, modernising, or migrating applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Understanding of cloud migration strategies and best practices.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications within AWS environments.
  • Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration technologies.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with microservices architectures.
  • Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Experience working within large-scale government or public sector transformation programmes.
  • Understanding of security and compliance requirements within regulated environments.
