Mechanical Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our Estates & Facilities team, supporting a diverse and complex building portfolio. You'll be responsible for delivering planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, and compliance activities to ensure all mechanical systems remain safe, reliable, and operational.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out PPM and reactive maintenance on:

  • HVAC systems
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • Fan Coil Units (FCUs)
  • Chilled Beams
  • Boilers
  • Pumps
  • Hot & Cold Water Systems
  • Plumbing Installations

• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults efficiently.

• Undertake minor mechanical installations and alterations.

• Inspect, service, and maintain plant rooms and building services infrastructure.

• Support compliance activities relating to water hygiene, pressure systems, and mechanical services.

• Carry out water hygiene tasks including temperature monitoring, flushing, and remedial works in line with HSG274 and ACOP L8 guidance.

• Accurately record maintenance activities using CAFM systems and digital devices.

• Participate in audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.

• Liaise with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders to coordinate works.

• Identify recurring faults and recommend service improvements.

• Complete mandatory training and health & safety requirements.

• Support apprentices and junior engineers through coaching and mentoring.

• Participate in the engineering on-call rota, providing emergency out-of-hours support when required.

Person Specification

Essential

• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, Plumbing & Heating, or equivalent.

• Strong knowledge of:

  • HVAC systems
  • Hot & Cold Water Systems
  • Pumps
  • AHUs
  • FCUs
  • Chilled Beams

• Proven fault-finding and problem-solving experience.

• Experience within a large, complex, or multi-site maintenance environment.

• Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and compliance requirements.

• Experience using CAFM systems, mobile devices, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and email systems.

• Knowledge of water hygiene, Legionella control, HSG274 and ACOP L8.

• Strong communication and organisational skills.

Desirable

• Experience within higher education, healthcare, public sector, or similarly complex environments.
• Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS).
• Experience with steam and pressure systems.
• City & Guilds F-Gas & ODS Regulations (Category I - 2079-11).
• Level 2 Diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems.
