Role

As a Principal Engineer, you will remain hands-on while helping shape the architecture and technical direction of highly available, distributed software platforms.

  1. Design and develop backend applications and services within a Java environment.
  2. Build and enhance distributed systems operating at high throughput and availability.
  3. Design event-driven architectures and integrations using Kafka.
  4. Shape technical approaches and contribute to architecture and engineering standards.
  5. Lead technical design discussions and drive complex initiatives from concept through to production.
  6. Build scalable APIs, microservices and integration patterns.
  7. Develop and operate applications across Kubernetes and containerised environments.
  8. Contribute to CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps and deployment automation.
  9. Work closely with engineering, product, architecture, security and operational teams.
  10. Investigate complex performance, resilience and production issues.
  11. Improve observability, maintainability and engineering practices across the platform.

Key Skills

  1. Significant commercial software engineering experience within complex production environments.
  2. Deep hands-on Java development experience.
  3. Strong understanding of distributed systems and scalable application design.
  4. Strong experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures.
  5. Experience designing microservices, APIs and integration patterns.
  6. Strong Kubernetes experience within production environments.
  7. Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns and modern engineering practices.
  8. Experience building highly available, resilient and performance-sensitive systems.
  9. Strong knowledge of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps and automated software delivery.
  10. Experience with secure software development, including authentication and authorisation.
  11. Comfortable owning technical initiatives and making architecture and design decisions.
  12. Experience with observability and production monitoring tooling.
  13. Able to work independently while influencing technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  14. Experience within financial services, trading or another high-throughput environment is advantageous.
  15. Exposure to Python, Scala, OpenShift, Docker or Helm would be beneficial.
  16. A degree in computer science, engineering or a related discipline is advantageous.
