Data Science Intern

Key information

Role: Full-Time

Duration: 3-6 Months

Salary: £2,510 per month

Location: London

UK visa sponsorship: no

Why we're hiring

Opbox is on a mission to help small businesses to turn their scattered data into real world actions that help them to grow. Our delivery team is growing and we're looking for a data science intern to join us. You'll spend time working across the full spectrum of data science tasks, from data pipelines, to building data warehouses, to deploying the latest ML and AI models.

We are a small but powerful team. You'll have the chance to learn from second time founders, experienced data scientists, AI experts and software developers.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who's curious about how data science works in the real world and wants to build something that matters.

You should have one or more of the following experiences:

  • Have studied maths, statistics, physics, engineering, computer science, or similar.
  • Some Python or R experience (even just from coursework).
  • Taken a statistics or data analysis module.
  • Built something with code before (doesn't matter what).
  • Curious about how businesses work.

About the role

You'll be working with our founding team to build data infrastructure and run analyses for real clients.

What you'll do:

  • Build data pipelines that handle messy client data (CSV files with weird formats, missing values, you name it).
  • Write validation code that catches data quality issues before they become problems.
  • Create analyses for paying customers—market analysis, customer insights, revenue forecasting.
  • Work directly with client data from companies across different industries.
  • Participate in client calls and see how your work influences business decisions.

What you'll learn:

  • How to build data systems that work in production.
  • Applied statistics with real, uncooperative data.
  • Applied AI, using cutting-edge techniques.
  • How data analytics can translate into business actions.
  • Startup experience with fast iteration and direct customer feedback.

Tech stack: Python, Pandas, SQL, Jupyter notebooks, data validation tools, Git workflows

This isn't a typical internship where you shadow someone. You'll have real responsibility from the start, working on multiple client projects with actual deadlines. Your code gets reviewed, your analyses get questioned, and your ideas get implemented on merit.

If successful, this internship is designed to lead to a full-time role in the company.

FAQs

Is this a paid internship?

Yes, we will pay you the London Living Wage this is ~£2,510 per month.

Do I need to be in an office?

Yes. We have an office in Peckham. Whilst we're pretty flexible, you should plan to be in the office 3 days per week.

What are the hours like?

Roughly 9-5 UK time works well, but we're flexible as long as work gets done and you can join team meetings.

Will this lead to a full-time offer?

That's our aim. We're looking for someone who could grow with the company.

What if I don't know much about startups/business?

That's fine. You'll learn by working directly with clients and seeing how they use your analyses.
