Job Summary
The aim of the Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) is to drive innovation in Defence and ensure the UK Armed Forces has access to the military capability that it needs now and in the future.
In line with Defence Reform, the DIU will shortly transition into the new UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) organisation. This will include a team of policy, strategy, technology, innovation and service delivery experts who will work collaboratively at the interface of MOD, government, and industry.
The DIU leads on co-ordinating innovation activities across the Department, engaging the Department’s senior leaders and connecting across Government and with key international partners and allies. The DIU leads by example, by pushing the boundaries, identifying and exploiting opportunities and engaging with our wide and diverse networks to drive innovation in Defence.
As the Training and Skills Desk Officer within the DIU, you will oversee Innovation Training and improvements to innovation culture and behaviours in line with the new Defence Operating Model. Representing the UKDI, you will ensure that innovation training, culture and behaviours are closely integrated with the operational framework to contribute to the rapid innovation implementation for Defence. It has never been more of a critical time to ensure Defence implements the right Innovation training across the organisation.
The role provides unique insight across innovation in defence and would suit anyone interested in a mix of policy, strategy, training development, technology and military capability development.
The position is advertised at 37 hours per week and is based in London, it can also be hybrid working, with some attendance in MOD Main building required. There will also be some travel to Defence Academy (DefAc) required.

This is a high-profile and exciting opportunity. The successful applicant will take the lead on the coordination of Innovation Training for Defence and work closely with colleagues at the Defence Academy (DefAc). A priority focus will be leading in the establishment an Innovation Training School within the Defence Capability Management School at Defence Academy. As Defence undergoes reform there is a need and opportunity for a stronger culture and behaviours around Innovation in Defence. The Innovation Training & Skills Desk Officer will play a key role in driving the work in this area. Continuous stakeholder engagement with colleagues in Defence and the broader government will be a significant aspect of this role.

The successful candidate will need to have excellent stakeholder management skills and experience in developing networks quickly. They will need to be able to work autonomously and on multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and be passionate about doing things differently. Experience in the people space, specifically developing training programmes, project delivery and managing change regarding culture and behaviours would be helpful. Some knowledge of Defence would be beneficial.
