They include former senior public and private sector professionals with extensive global and national experience in developing, interpreting, implementing, and enforcing laws, policies, and corporate privacy programs relevant to the data economy.

CIPL is looking for a Vice President of Policy and Consulting to join our team in our London office. This role reports to CIPL’s President.

About The Role

Vice President of Policy and Consulting is a global leadership role, working closely with CIPL’s President and CIPL’s Directors. The primary purpose of the role is to advance CIPL’s policy priorities and initiatives globally in relation to a broad range of digital regulations, laws and implementation, related to privacy, data and emerging tech (including AI), as well as internal organizational governance and best practices. The role will work with CIPL’s international team of privacy experts who are based in CIPL’s offices in Washington DC, London and Brussels.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day Responsibilities Include:

• Identify and lead targeted research projects relating to CIPL’s current and new workstreams and projects, as well as drafting and overseeing the implementation of key CIPL thought leadership and deliverables such as memoranda, reports and other written materials reflecting the findings of such research.
• Identify and lead consulting work for specific public and private sector entities (including CIPL member organizations) that relate to CIPL’s global privacy, data and tech policy work and expertise.
• Help define CIPL’s strategy, objectives, areas of growth and expansion in broader areas of data and digital policy, and support CIPL’s President in executing that strategy.
• Maintain and deepen CIPL’s position as a leading policy and best practices thought leader and represent CIPL with internal and external stakeholders.
• Grow CIPL’s membership, funding and more varied service offerings, including consulting opportunities and projects.
• Deepen relationships and partnerships with members, senior business leaders and technologists, and key external stakeholders in governments, the regulatory community, international organizations, academia and complementary think tanks.
• Oversee and work closely with CIPL’s leadership team and team members to develop strategies and implement project plans that relate to or depend upon ongoing research and consulting work to advance CIPL’s global policy agenda on a wide range of privacy, data, and tech policy issues. This includes, but is not limited, to the following topics:
• Proposed legislation and rule-making;
• Application of data and privacy rules to emerging technologies;
• Cross-border data flows;
• Data localization;
• Accountability-based information management and privacy and AI governance; Accountable AI best practices
• Regional developments (e.g., Europe, US (state and federal), Canada, Latin America, India, and Asia-Pacific);
• The role of corporate data protection or privacy officers and other relevant organizational data and AI governance officers;
• Privacy, data and AI risk assessment and management; transparency and user control;
• Privacy preserving technologies (PPTs);
• Data driven innovation; data analytics;
• Cloud computing;
• Data sharing between and among private sector organizations and public sector organizations;
• Children’s data, privacy and safety, and
• Effective and smart regulatory strategy and oversight; cross-disciplinary regulatory coordination
  
  

• Develop and promote specific policy positions by working with CIPL’s leadership team and CIPL member companies.
• Draft and oversee drafting of regulatory consultation responses, white papers, issue briefs and articles.
• Developing agendas and content for CIPL and non-CIPL events and speaking/representing CIPL at these events.
  
  

About You

You will have:

• Superb writing, analytical, and public speaking skills and ability to distill and present complex information and concepts in a clear and persuasive way.
• Excellent knowledge of the global legislative, regulatory and policy environments in relation to privacy, data, AI, emerging tech, and broader data and digital issues.
• Existing track record of contacts and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in business, academia, governments and, in particular, regulators.
• Ability to conduct and lead research on emerging data privacy and other digital and tech laws, policy and organizational best practices and related legal developments.
• Strong understanding of data driven innovation, technology trends and/or computer and data science.
• Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive attitude, eagerness for continuous learning, transformation and development, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to build consensus among different stakeholders, drive impact and change through diplomacy and a constructive, solution-oriented approach.
• Excellent business acumen, command of the global corporate environment and practical knowledge or experience in data protection and data compliance issues and in privacy, data governance and/or AI management programs.
  
  

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Education: JD or Master’s in public policy or equivalent technical or science degree required.
• Minimum of ten years of relevant of experience shaping innovation policy, regulatory strategy, and public impact across government, international institutions, and key sectors of global economy.
• Strong preference for a candidate with a background in regulatory agencies, government, think tanks, or similar organizations.
• Proven track record in strategic and change management roles and leading high-performing teams to drive growth and achieve strategic objectives.
• Excellent knowledge of global privacy, security and broader data laws and policy, and regulation of AI and emerging technologies.
• Experience in leading consulting engagements, writing consulting proposals and deliverables, white papers, public consultation responses, and articles on issues related to privacy, data, AI and emerging tech law, policy and governance.
• Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.

• Understanding of technology trends, computer science and/or data analytics.
• Regulatory or policy experience, competition law, online safety, cybersecurity.
