Job Summary
DDC’s (the Directorate of Defence Communications) mission is to support the reputation of the department and Armed Forces through influencing the understanding and perceptions of multiple Defence audiences, and communicating our key messages to them.
This post is in the DDC Strategy & Plans People team, responsible for producing strategic communications plans in support of the People of the Armed Forces, including Service Personnel, Defence Civil Servants, Service families and veterans.
We are looking for a focused Senior Communications Officer with substantial comms experience, to work in one of Government’s busiest communications teams.
DDC offers flexible ways of working, with a balance of office and home working for all staff. Please note, all staff are expected to attend the workplace for at least 60% of their working week (this position is advertised at 37 hours per week).

This role requires someone who can establish strong relationships with multiple stakeholders, and be able to work with teams across DDC, policy areas, the Single Services, Ministers’ offices and other Government departments.
You will need strong organisation skills, resilience and determination. Creative flair and excellent judgement will also be important, as you become a trusted adviser to Ministers and senior officials.
You will also be well acquainted both digital media and evaluation techniques to help ensure we are constantly evolving and improving.

- Supporting comms planning for the People priorities in the recent Strategic Defence Review, including focus on military accommodation, opportunities for cadets and young people, a ‘whole-of-society approach’ to Defence, and a planned Defence Readiness Bill.
- With a strong focus on recognising the world class men and women of the Armed Forces, this role supports the People priorities in the Defence Communications Strategy, including three key areas: Armed Forces Recruitment and Retention, Support to Service families, and Raising Standards within the Armed Forces.
- This role provides the opportunity to produce creative communications, and you will deliver first class strategic communications plans to underline the department’s intention to renew the nation’s contract with those who serve and have served.
- We need you to consider the four Government Communication Service technical skills throughout your work – Insight, Ideas, Implementation and Impact.
- We need you to work with a range of stakeholders to achieve the right media, digital and marketing effects. Recommendations in your comms plans for both traditional and modern media platforms are essential, including thinking ‘outside the box’ with new and creative ideas.
