Devereux Chambers is seeking a Clerking and Facilities Assistant / Junior Clerk to provide essential support to our barristers, clerking team and wider business services staff. This is a busy, varied position in a leading set of chambers, where no two days are the same and high standards of professionalism, organisation and client care are expected.
Devereux Chambers is a leading set of 57 barristers, including 13 KCs, supported by an experienced and enthusiastic team of practice managers and business services staff. Working as a Clerking and Facilities Assistant / Junior Clerk offers exposure to working across multiple practice areas, providing opportunities to develop skills in a varied and dynamic position within a collaborative and professional environment.
Main responsibilities are:
Administrative and document support
- Copying, printing and filing papers for members of chambers and the clerking team.
- Ensuring documents are prepared, organised and available in good time for conferences, hearings and other commitments.
- Lodging documents at court and ensuring all necessary paperwork is correctly submitted and tracked.
Court and barrister support
- Assisting barristers to court with their papers, ensuring timely arrival and that all materials are complete and in order.
- Responding quickly and professionally to requests from barristers and clerks, often to tight deadlines.
Post and reception duties
- Managing the incoming and outgoing post, including sorting, distributing and arranging deliveries and collections.
- Providing reception cover when required, welcoming clients and visitors, creating meeting links and handling enquiries and maintaining a professional front-of-house presence.
Facilities and office support
- Carrying out daily facilities checks and tasks, including organising recycling, checking and replenishing copiers and reporting any issues.
- Supporting the smooth running of chambers’ premises by liaising with colleagues and external suppliers where necessary.
- Assisting with general office duties to ensure an efficient and well-presented working environment.
Team support and collaboration
- Working closely with the clerking team, members of chambers and business services staff to provide consistent, high-quality support.
- Contributing to a positive and cooperative team culture, sharing information and assisting colleagues as needed.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A–C (or equivalent), including Maths and English.
Experience
- Previous experience in barristers’ chambers or other professional services environments is beneficial but not essential, provided you can demonstrate an equivalent skill set.
- Experience in administrative, customer-facing or facilities roles will be advantageous.
Skills and attributes
- First-rate communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with barristers, colleagues, clients and court staff.
- Excellent attention to detail and diligence in handling documents, managing tasks and following procedures.
- Strong people skills; articulate, client-friendly and able to build rapport with a wide range of contacts.
- A focused and proactive approach, with the ability to prioritise, manage time effectively and remain calm under pressure.
- An excellent team player, able to work collaboratively while also taking responsibility for individual tasks.
