The Health and Safety Governance Lead will lead and ensure effective implementation of the health and safety governance framework across the organisation , from Board and Exec level through to operational committees. They will provide senior strategic oversight of the communication of health and safety performance, driving continuous improvement and risk mitigation across all levels of the business. To ensure that the CSO operates with focus, clarity and strategic effectiveness.

Lead the Health and Safety Governance Framework

  • Ensure the effective implementation and continuous improvement of the health and safety governance ecosystem, maintaining clear alignment from Board level through to operational committees.
  • Attend H&S Board and Executive Committee meetings to support the Chief Safety Officer to capture meeting outcomes and provide advice and support to CSO. Work with the Company Secretary to ensure minutes and actions are adequately captured for Board and Executive Committees

Strategic Planning and Risk Management

  • Proactively plan governance agendas and align them with organisational risk priorities, ensuring that key risks are identified, discussed, and escalated appropriately.
  • Provide strategic advice and support to CSO, shaping reports, priorities, initiatives and key decisions

Performance Monitoring and Reporting

  • Prepare and maintain performance papers on behalf of the Chief Safety Officer. Oversee and review the collection, analysis, and presentation of health and safety performance data, providing clear and actionable insights for executive and board reporting.
  • Ensure appropriate review and sign off of all submissions including from the wider Executive.
  • Escalate risks and concerns to CSO in a timely manner, resolving issues with SHE Leadership Team where possible and reducing bottlenecks.

Delivery of Health and Safety Strategic Initiatives

  • Coordinate and monitor the delivery of the company’s health and safety strategic plan, working closely with the Senior Leadership team to ensure objectives and milestones are met and risks are flagged and managed.
  • Maintain oversight of all significant ongoing initiatives for which the safety SLT are responsible for, flagging any risks when appropriate.

Stakeholder Management and Compliance

  • Managing high-level relationships with various stakeholders across the business to ensure effective cross-departmental governance and priorities.
  • Liaise directly with Executive level colleagues to ensure they are sighted on key H&S governance items and decisions, and action their feedback on Board submissions.


What you will need

  • Hold a relevant Degree or able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience in Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, with a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate (or equivalent Level 3 qualification) is essential; higher-level health and safety qualifications and Chartered IOSH membership are advantageous
  • Proven experience developing and embedding health and safety governance frameworks within large, complex and highly regulated organisations
  • Knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements, with the ability to apply this knowledge to drive compliance and continuous improvement
  • Experience in risk management, incident investigation and root cause analysis, with a focus on identifying lessons learned and implementing effective corrective actions
  • Skilled in analysing and presenting performance data and insights, enabling senior leaders to make informed, evidence-based decisions on health, safety and risk matters
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, organisational and programme management capabilities, with a track record of delivering strategic initiatives, influencing at all levels and managing multiple priorities effectively
