The Guardian

Our vision is for safe and effective nursing and midwifery practice across the four countries of the UK – regulated and supported by the NMC – a fit for the future organisation, with fairness and equity at the heart of everything we do.

Our role is to protect the public and maintain confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. As the largest independent regulator in Europe of more than 860,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have a crucial role in making this a reality.

We do this by setting and promoting high education and professional standards for all future and registered nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England.

We also ensure every nurse, midwife and nursing associate on our Register meets clear standards of conduct and practice which protects the public and the reputation of our professions.

We have a duty to investigate concerns and to take steps to protect the public in the relatively rare instances where we need to limit or restrict a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s right to practise.

We are building a new NMC with integrity, fairness, respect, equity and effectiveness at its core.

We are determined to improve and modernise our culture and ways of working. This will ensure that the public and professionals feel confident in our work.

About the team

The Corporate Planning, Performance and Risk team plays a key role in helping the NMC understand how effectively we are delivering our priorities and where we need to focus our attention.

Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, the team brings together business planning, performance reporting and risk management to provide leaders with a clear, evidence-based view of organisational effectiveness.

This is a collaborative team that works across the NMC, building strong relationships with colleagues and challenging constructively to ensure that the information we use to understand performance is accurate, meaningful and tells the right story.

Your role & impact

As Senior Performance and Risk Reporting Officer, you'll play a key role in turning complex data into clear, insightful and engaging reporting for the Executive Board, Council and senior stakeholders.

You'll lead on corporate performance reporting, bringing together data, context and analysis to explain what is happening across the organisation, why it is happening and where action may be needed. Your work will help senior leaders understand performance against strategic objectives, identify emerging risks and make informed decisions.

You'll use your analytical skills and natural curiosity to look beyond the surface of the numbers, identifying trends, successes, risks and potential root causes. You'll also have the confidence to challenge assumptions where the evidence tells a different story, helping to maintain the integrity and credibility of the organisation's performance framework.

You'll:

  • Lead the production of accurate, clear and compelling corporate performance reports, translating complex information into a narrative that is accessible to a range of audiences.

  • Analyse datasets to identify meaningful trends, risks and successes and use these insights to strengthen performance reporting and decision-making.

  • Quality assure performance information and KPIs provided by directorates, challenging data, methodologies and assumptions where appropriate.

  • Work with stakeholders across the organisation to develop and refresh meaningful performance measures, ensuring KPIs effectively track progress against strategic objectives and the Business Plan.

  • Connect performance intelligence with enterprise-wide risk management, helping to build a stronger understanding of the relationship between organisational performance and risk.

  • Build effective relationships with risk coordinators and colleagues across the organisation to bring together intelligence and strengthen reporting.

  • Support the corporate business planning process, coordinating contributions and helping to identify appropriate measures of progress and outcomes.

  • Manage competing priorities and deadlines, adapting quickly to changing business needs while maintaining a high standard of quality.

  • Work collaboratively across the team, supporting colleagues and deputising for senior colleagues when required.

The insight you provide will have a direct impact on how the NMC understands its performance, responds to risk and makes decisions about where action and improvement are needed.

What you'll bring

We're looking for an analytical and inquisitive professional who enjoys getting beneath the numbers and turning complex information into clear, meaningful insight.

You'll bring:

  • Experience of monitoring, analysing and describing business performance, with an understanding of how performance can be measured against strategic objectives, projects, programmes and outcomes.

  • Strong report writing skills and the ability to create clear, accurate and narrative-driven reports for senior audiences.

  • Experience of designing or using effective measurement frameworks, including KPIs, benefits and outcome indicators.

  • Strong data analysis and visualisation skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to quality assure data and reporting information and identify inconsistencies or gaps.

  • The confidence to question data, methodologies and assumptions and provide evidence-based advice to support decision-making.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively across different areas of an organisation.

  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines.

  • Experience of risk management and/or corporate business planning would be an advantage.

If you're someone who is naturally curious, enjoys finding the story behind the numbers and wants your analysis to have a real impact on organisational decision-making, we'd love to hear from you.
