About the Role


Our client a consultancy who supporting a NHS client are seeking an experienced Technical Architect to join a major Electronic Patient Record (EPR) programme and provide independent technical leadership and assurance across the programme's end-to-end architecture.
This is a key role within the programme, responsible for establishing a clear, deliverable and assured technical architecture across integration, infrastructure, security, testing and data.
The successful candidate will provide constructive challenge to suppliers and internal delivery teams, identify technical risks and dependencies early, and ensure that architectural decisions support both successful EPR implementation and the organisation's longer-term digital and technology strategy.
You will operate at the intersection of programme delivery, clinical systems, technology, suppliers and organisational strategy, translating complex technical requirements into practical and deliverable solutions.



Key Responsibilities



Technical Architecture

  • Develop and maintain the end-to-end technical architecture for the EPR programme.
  • Define target architecture across applications, integration, infrastructure, security, data, environments and operational services.
  • Establish architectural principles, standards, patterns, assumptions and constraints.
  • Ensure technical architecture is scalable, resilient, secure, supportable and future-proof.
  • Maintain architecture decisions and ensure they are appropriately governed.


Integration and Interoperability

  • Define the EPR integration architecture and strategy across clinical, corporate and external systems.
  • Rationalise existing and proposed interfaces, identifying duplication, unnecessary complexity and opportunities for simplification.
  • Map technical dependencies, interfaces and end-to-end data flows.
  • Provide technical leadership on interoperability using appropriate standards and technologies, including HL7, FHIR, APIs and messaging.
  • Identify integration risks and dependencies early and ensure they are reflected in programme planning.


Delivery and Implementation

  • Current-state architecture pack
  • Target-state technical architecture documentation
  • Acceptance criteria for infrastructure readiness
  • Identify technical risks and dependencies, and interrogate assumptions
  • Transition-state and decommissioning strategy
  • Implement architecture governance and standards
  • Identity and security plan assessment

About You You will be an experienced Technical Architect who can combine strong technical depth with the ability to operate effectively in a complex, multi-stakeholder healthcare programme. You will be comfortable working with senior stakeholders, technical teams, suppliers and programme leadership, and will have the confidence to challenge technical decisions constructively where required.



Essential Experience and Skills

  • Substantial experience in technical architecture.
  • Proven experience delivering or assuring large scale EPR or clinical system programmes.
  • Experience working within the NHS or a comparable complex healthcare environment.
  • Strong end-to-end architecture experience spanning integration, infrastructure, security, testing and data.
  • Strong knowledge of HL7 and FHIR and healthcare interoperability.
  • Experience of complex system integration and interface architecture.
  • Experience of technical assurance and supplier management.
  • Experience of architecture governance, technical decision-making, risk management and delivery assurance.
  • Experience of data migration and/or complex healthcare data environments.
  • Strong understanding of security, resilience, availability, performance and scalability requirements.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.






Working Arrangements


This is a London based hybrid role.
The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with programme, technology, clinical, operational and supplier teams and attend the relevant programme location for key workshops, governance meetings, design sessions, testing, implementation and other critical activities.
The role will require a balance of remote working and regular on-site engagement, with the exact pattern agreed according to programme and delivery requirements.

  • A technical foundation capable of supporting the EPR programme's immediate requirements and longer-term digital strategy.
