PURPOSE OF THE JOB HGV Driver

To drive vehicles up to 32 tonne as directed by management

To undertake other duties in association with the type of vehicle driven and/or the specific service that is being delivered.

Responsibilities HGV Driver

• Act as the lead operative with responsibility for the completion of all work allocated to the vehicle, safely and to a high standard. This will include direction of other crew members on the vehicle, maintaining safe working practices at all times - especially when reversing - and wearing personal protective equipment. Report any issues with crew performance, conduct or adherence to health and safety to the Supervisor, including any supporting evidence, at the earliest opportunity.
• Undertake vehicle checks on allocated vehicle at the start of every shift and ensure that it is legally compliant and roadworthy. Prior to commencing work make a record of the vehicle check in accordance with all legal requirements either in writing or with the use of information technology where it has been provided.
• Comply with the Highway Code and all traffic laws, including the security and weight of loads. Operate the vehicle and all ancillary equipment such as tail lift and bin lift mechanisms in accordance with the training provided and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure allocated vehicle remains roadworthy throughout the working shift.
• Complete logbooks fully and accurately either in writing or with the use of information technology where it has been provided.
• Keep driving licence, Driver Qualification card (CPC licence) and Tacho card up to date.
• Report defects that make or may make allocated vehicle legally non-compliant and/or unroadworthy immediately. Where such defects occur during shift, park allocated vehicle safely and call Supervisor or the Fleet Service to seek advice on next steps.
• Report accidents to Supervisor immediately. Where an accident results in injury to a member of staff or a member of the public, call emergency service(s) as appropriate.
• Carry out other non-driving tasks as directed, including but not limited to loading or unloading of goods, waste and any other item that needs transporting. Emptying litter bins, sweeping and cleaning.
• Comply with all site rules and instructions provided by site staff when unloading waste at disposal sites.
• Separate and tip materials as required, this could include residual waste, recycling, hazardous waste or other waste types.
• Clean the allocated vehicle (inside and out) at least every two weeks or as directed. Ensure vehicles are free of extraneous items such as teddy bears, toys and flags.
